A Christmas Gift...

Some Assembly Required

'Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house
I searched for the tools to hand to my spouse.
Instructions were studied and we were inspired,
In hopes we could manage "Some Assembly Required."

The children were quiet (not asleep) in their beds,
While Dad and I faced the evening with dread:
A kitchen, two bikes, Barbie's town house to boot!
And, thanks to Grandpa, a train with a toot!

We opened the boxes, my heart skipped a beat....
Let no pieces be missing or parts incomplete!
Too late for last-minute returns or replacement;
If we can't get it right, it goes down in the basement!

When what to my worrying eyes should appear,
But 50 sheets of directions, concise, but not clear,
With each part numbered and every slot named,
So if there were failure, only we could be blamed.

click

More rapid than eagles the parts then fell out,
All over the carpet they were scattered about.
"Now bolt it! Now twist it! Attach it right there!
Slide on the seats, and staple the stair!

Hammer the shelves, and nail to the stand."
"Honey," said hubby, "you just glued my hand."
And then in a twinkling, I knew for a fact
That all the toy dealers had indeed made a pact

To keep parents busy all Christmas Eve night
With "assembly required" till morning's first light.
We spoke not a word, but kept bent at our work,
Till our eyes, they went bleary; our fingers all hurt.

The coffee went cold and the night it wore thin
Before we attached the last rod and last pin.
Then laying the tools away in the chest,
We fell into bed for a well-deserved rest.

But I said to my husband just before I passed out,
"This will be the best Christmas, without any doubt.
Tomorrow we'll cheer, let the holiday ring,
And not have to run to the store for a thing!

"We did it! We did it! The toys are all set
For the perfect, most perfectest Christmas, I bet!"
Then off to dreamland, at last sweet repose
I gratefully went, although I suppose

There's something to say for those self-deluded
I'd forgotten that BATTERIES are never included!

GREAT GREAT show...

Anyone who knows me knows I'm a bit of a Broadway whore...I love good shows!

Well last night we saw one of the best shows I've seen in ages...The Producers by Mel Brooks. OMFG-this was hilarious!

The most interesting thing was that the leading role of Leo Bloom was played by Alan Ruck who played Cameron in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. He was outstanding.....but it kinda made me realize-I'm really 35 years old!!!!

How much have I saved?

With a 10.5% paycut coming 1/1/05 I decided it was time to go on a saving spree. Here's what I've managed:

1) Cable bill-cut by $15 a month and frozen for a year.
2) Cell phones (2)-Cut each by 8.5% permanent as long as I maintain my current employment
3) Fitness Club-cut by $20 a month for a year
4) Next on the list....Electric Bill.

UPDATE: Van was paid off so that saves another $150/month.

Not bad :)

Rochester City School District gets it wrong again

Ok, earlier this year our City School district said they had such a budget shortfall that they couldn't afford to pay school nurses.

Now there's an elementary school district spending $7,000 to take their entire school to see "The Polar Express". Wouldn't it be more economically feasible to wait until it comes out on DVD, get all the kids into an auditorium and show it there???

Talk about fiscal mismanagement!

Knee update

It's wierd...today, with no drugs or medication of any kind, my knee doesn't hurt at all. I've been discharged from Physical Therapy, and at least for now, will probably not need surgery.

Have to see how it goes through the Winter.

The Ultimate Cold Solution

I've been fighting the losing end of an uphill/downhill battle with a cold for almost 2 weeks now...it's finally settled into my chest which is more tolerable for me...

To sleep at night I found THE solution....Nyquil + a generous slathering of Vicks on the chest.

Psalm 22 Bush-style

Courtesy of Fishbucket:

Bush is my shepherd, I shall be in want.
He maketh me lie down on park benches.
He leadeth me beside the still factories,
He restores my doubts about the Republican Party.
He leadeth me into the paths of unemployment for his cronies' sake.
Yea, though no weapons of mass destruction have been found, he maketh me continue to fear evil.
His tax cuts for the rich and his deficit spending discomfort me.
He anointeth me with never-ending debt.
Verily my days of savings and assets are kaput.
Surely poverty and hard living shall follow me all the days of his
administration,
And my jobless child shall dwell in my basement forever.
